New year, new start! Thinking about starting up your own business in County Durham?


As the world continues to navigate its way through these unchartered waters, it is important to recognise and take advantage of the new opportunities created during times of hardship.

The past has shown us that recessions are a good time for people to take the leap and start their own business. Some of today’s biggest global enterprises were started during recessions, the likes of Uber, Groupon, Airbnb and WhatsApp were all established during the last global recession.

In the new “low-touch” economy, where new businesses have an advantage of starting with a new business model that will help them adapt and become more robust. With jobs prospects moving into uncertain times, its time people took back control of their time, ideas and talents and start something that they can shape and grow.

Taking the leap and becoming your own boss may feel like a daunting prospect, but it’s important to remember that you don’t have to do it alone.

There are an abundance of schemes and programmes that can offer support with all aspect of starting a business. One such programme is the Durham Ambitious Business Start-ups (‘DABS’). DABS is an ERDF-funded programme that helps high-quality start-ups in County Durham start trading and offers premium quality support during your critical first 12 months in business.

If you are at an early stage of developing a new business but you haven’t quite firmed up your business idea, then DABS LABS is for you. This innovative workshop will help you to shape and build confidence in your idea and potentially generate new income streams. We have some great tools and techniques to help you to turn your ideas into real commercial opportunities using design thinking, innovation and the potential of market disruption.

Please note that this is a series of two half-day workshops with the first session taking place on 28th January and the second on 29th January (9.30am – 1.30pm). All events are held online using Zoom.
